Encoded Expressions traces its origins to an unexpected visual discovery in 2003. An exploration of winning Irish Lottery numbers revealed striking patterns within historic numerical sequences, including a formation reminiscent of DNA - an observation that opened an entirely new field of enquiry into the visual structures concealed within information and human expression.

The Visual Language
Encoded Expressions is an evolving conceptual art project created by Yona Roöri and developed since 2003. At its foundation is Yona’s original “Visual DNA methodology” - a manual process through which meaningful sources such as texts, music, songs and numerical data are transformed into abstract visual compositions.
The project shifts familiar forms of information and expression from the realm of reading, listening and interpretation into the realm of visual experience. Drawing upon the ancient relationship between letters and numbers found in systems such as numerology and gematria, it carries these principles into an original contemporary artistic methodology, where numerical structure becomes a point of departure for visual discovery.
Within Yona Roöri’s practice, “Visual DNA” describes the distinctive visual architecture that emerges from this transformation. The term is metaphorical: it refers to an underlying structural identity revealed through the artist’s process rather than to biological DNA. The original source remains embedded within the work, yet its familiar appearance is transformed - language becomes form, sequence becomes rhythm, and meaning acquires another visual presence.
Encoded Expressions occupies a territory between abstraction and information, structure and intuition, the visible and the concealed. Its works do not illustrate their sources, but reveal their visual presence emerging from within.
An Expanding Field of Possibilities
At the heart of Encoded Expressions lies a possibility of remarkable breadth: anything that can be expressed through numerical structure can, in principle, enter its visual territory.
Its source material can therefore reach across languages, alphabets, cultures and histories — from a private sentence, a name or a piece of music to literature, spiritual texts, cultural material and numerical or historical data. Each becomes the origin of an entirely distinct composition, opening an almost inexhaustible field for artistic research and discovery.
This breadth allows Encoded Expressions to move between the deeply personal and the collective, the contemporary and the historical. Sources connected to identity, memory, culture, place or shared experience can acquire a visual presence without requiring the viewer to speak the original language, recognise the words or know the history from which they emerged.
The resulting work can remain intimate or become architectural. It can exist on paper or silk, through mixed media, textile and pattern, as an object or installation, or extend into interior and architectural environments — creating new relationships between meaning, image, material and space.
A Contemporary Language Of Connection
In a world shaped by an extraordinary multiplicity of languages, cultures and information, Encoded Expressions offers another way of encountering both what distinguishes us and what we share.
Words carry histories. Names carry identities. Texts preserve thought, memory, belief and imagination. Music crosses boundaries of language. Numbers record, measure and organise much of the world around us. Each belongs to its own context, yet each carries the possibility of entering another visual dimension.
Through this transformation, difference is neither erased nor translated into sameness. Sources originating in different languages, cultures and periods can inhabit a shared visual space while retaining the individuality of their origins — creating possibilities for dialogue across people, places and histories.
More than two decades after its origins, Encoded Expressions continues to expand as both a body of work and an artistic proposition - from individual compositions to collections, from intimate meaning to shared environments, and from the scale of the page to the scale of architecture.
What makes Encoded Expressions distinctive is the relationship between one original methodology and an almost limitless universe of potential sources - creating an evolving artistic field whose possibilities continue to unfold across languages, cultures, disciplines and histories.
The Larger Mission
The Visual DNA methodology is currently entirely manual, placing practical boundaries on the size of a source that can be decoded and bringing shorter texts and selected passages into focus.
The larger mission of Encoded Expressions is to move beyond this boundary - transforming complete books and monumental historical, literary, cultural and spiritual texts into singular visual compositions, where thousands of pages can be encountered as one work of art.
Realising this vision will require the creation of dedicated technology based on the original Visual DNA methodology - extending its possibilities beyond the limits of manual processing. The technology is not the destination, but the means through which an artistic vision of this magnitude could become possible.
The ambition is to bring monumental sources from different languages, cultures and histories into a shared visual space, each revealing an identity entirely its own. What has been read, studied and carried across centuries could then be encountered in another dimension - not page by page, but as a whole, brought together through the universal language of art.
